Asia E-Evidence Training in Counter-Terrorism Investigations

More E-Evidence training completed for fifty investigators and prosecutors from twelve countries from South and South East Asia!

This training brought together online service provider representatives, Interpol, Europol, FBI, US and Canadian Central Authorities – this cross-sector participation has been a key feature of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), International Association of Prosectors (IAP) and the Counter Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) project on Requesting E-Evidence Across Borders.

We have now trained more than three hundred practitioners in four continents – on requesting E-Evidence from Internet or Online Service Providers – such as Facebook, Google, Twitter, Kik, Snapchat, WhatsApp, Skype and smaller platforms used by terrorists and organised crime groups.

The practical training takes the participants through the essential steps of preservation, voluntary disclosure, emergency disclosure and mutual legal assistance requests.

The participants receive copies of the Practical Guide for Requesting E-Evidence Across Borders, which includes:

  1. Mapping of Service Provider procedures and contacts
  2. Model forms for preservation, non-content direct requests and emergency disclosure requests
  3. Model mutual legal assistance requests
  4. National laws and procedures from selected countries

The training equips the participants with experience of how to use these tools with preservation, emergency disclosure and mutual legal assistance cross-border practical exercises.

We place emphasis on early communication by “picking up the phone” to make necessary enquiries to understand service provider procedures, national legislation of requested States, admissibility requirements and how to speedily access data.
